Skating...

Had a really good weekend.  Friday got chores done and started on organizing paperwork and tax stuff.  The older boys had plans to go to the high school basketball game at night.  This includes Sweety.  I am not interested in basketball at all and Elijah didn't want to go either so the 2 of us went out for dinner.  While we were eating a good friend texted me saying she was taking her little guy skating and asked if we wanted to go.  I kinda got a little excited. I used to rollerskate all the time when I was young and it has been a long time since I have rollerskated.   So we decided to check it out.  I never took Elijah to a skating rink before so we went.  Well we had a fabulous time!!  Elijah did great and I got to skate for 2 hours.  Now first let me tell you that I started off pretty slow but I think I did ok and got a lot more confident after only a short time.   Secondly, I was the hands down oldest person out there skating.  When did I get so old? Ugh...oh well, I did it anyway and boy did it get my heart rate up. I'm not used to incorporating fun into my exercise.  I do my scheduled exercise and that is about it, but instead of watching tv or a movie, I was skating off calories andhaving fun.   A huge thanks to my friend for asking me.  I wold have never thought of skating. The next 2 days, I had sore muscles I didn't know I had.  Lol.  All in all a great weekend. Today's tip:  Try something totally different that you may not even think of. You will burn extra calories and have a blast!   Blessings, Trish

Healthy brownies

Ok, so I was having a chocolate craving, which I rarely do. My problem food is bread and pizza, but today it was chocolate. So, I make homemade brownies...healthy brownies. These are made with whole wheat flour, honey, and applesauce...minimal olive oil...so very low fat and pretty healthy. Well they would be if I didn't eat almost half the tray. I seriously ate 3 brownies...big ones.

So this is why I really can't bake too often. I make stuff healthy, but I eat too much of it. Oh well, I have to just see it for what it is and move on and not let it sabotage my whole day. It happens.

- Jonah had one large one....they were really good.

Today's tip: don't beat yourself up if you eat too much, just don't let it carry on into the next meal...the next day...the next week.

Blessings,

Trish

I Almost Caved

Yes, last night I almost caved. I was busy most of the day trying to get organized. I really really want to be organized, but I fall so short. So, I decided I really am going to try. So I went through all my bills, receipts, paperwork for the household and business. It felt really good to get most of it done.

I took out pork tenderloin for supper and planned to make it with rice and a veggie. Well something came over me around 230pm. Call it a dip in blood sugar, over tiredness, or whatever but I just didn't want to cook. I just didn't. I thought, I am going to call Sweety to just bring home Chinese. That's it...done. Then I remembered a blog post I read 2 days ago about a mom who felt the same way and she almost ordered a pizza...until she went online and reached out for some motivation...and she got it and made her meal. That really affected me and I said, no Chinese on a Tuesday. I will feel much better eating a healthy dinner and my family will get a healthier meal.

So, I pushed through and made a teriyaki pork tenderloin, whole wheat noodles and jasmine rice, sautéed cabbage, and a broccoli and cheese bread.

The verdict...everyone loved the meal and I felt good about not caving. We had a nice family meal for at least 1/2 the calories we would have consumed.

Think about the cash saved also!

So I am glad I didn't cave last night. Some days I do and get some takeout, but as along as it is occasionally and not regularly, I can live with that.

Today's tip: If you don't feel like it, reach out to someone...a parent, friend, sibling or even a blog to give you some inspiration!

Blessings,

Trish

Good weekend, Super Sunday

Had a good weekend. I must say it was the most football I have watched. The playoffs are pretty interesting to me, especially when our team is in them. Let me start though with Tim Tebow. It doesn't really matter of you are a Broncos fan or even a football fan. Tim Tebow is the real deal. If you don't know who he is look him up. He is the most genuine public figure I have ever seen. He pulls no punches about his love for the Lord and his actions show it. Yes I was sorry to see him get totally clobbered by the Patriots, but Tebow has a higher calling than football. Gotta love his humility.

We also got our first snow this weekend. It is so pretty. Sweety took a couple shots.

-

By the time he was heading back to the house the snow was just about melted.

Then it was some NY Giants football.

What a great game! He doesn't look thrilled but he was.

Got in a 3 mile walk on Sat. But with all the football did a wee bit too much snacking.

Today back on the straight and narrow.

Blessings,

Trish

Have I mentioned quinoa?

That title is a joke because I know I have talked about quinoa, but I am just obsessed with it lately. It is so delicious with a nutty flavor and such a high nutritional content. So much bang for your nutritional buck. It is becoming so widespread too on all the talk shows, news articles etc.

I made some the other day and have been enjoying it all week.

It is soooo yummy. I use this as a meal or a replacement for rice. I add lemon juice and roasted vegetables and fresh basil and cilantro. You could also add chicken or pork to make this a full meal.

So, try some quinoa. If you like cous cous, it is most like that, but I like the taste way better. Note: kids are fussy on this. I CANNOT get my kids to eat this. I try, but they just don't like it. I will keep trying, who knows someday they may change their minds.

Today's tip: Try quinoa. If you have a Costco around that is where it is the cheapest. Otherwise it could be quite pricy.

Blessings,

Trish

Happy Tuesday. I have been cutting back again....you know over eating over the holidays. The first thing I do is measure my food. Gosh have you ever measured a serving? It really puts into perspective how much I eat. I had a bowl of Cheerios this morning. I measured out a serving...3/4 Cup. Here is what I got:

That's it folks. This was before my 1/2 cup of milk. This is not much food. I think we as a whole just eat way more than a portion. I know I do. Let's just say I was still hungry after this bowl of cereal. That is why I usually go for more bang for your buck foods. A 1/2 cup of oatmeal is the same amount of calories but way more filling for me. Tip for today: Measure your food for a day. You may be shocked at what a serving really looks like. Tennis Anyone?

Ok so this weekend was really good. First off on Friday I tried a little tennis. Sweety wanted to try a sport we both can play together and he saw some tennis rackets at the local thrift store and wanted to get them. I said no way and kept walking. I have never played tennis before. Now I am not totally unatheletic, I played softball and was a cheerleader for 4 years. Please don't sneer, cheer leading is hard sometimes...I was ALWAYS at the bottom of the pyramid. So I thought about it and went back and got the 2 prince tennis rackets and wrapped them up for Christmas. Friday was doom day. It was 60 and sunny in January...what are the chances? So we went out to the court. I was feeling pretty good with my headband on and all.

Well, let's just say it didn't go too well for my first go around. I hit way more balls over the fence than over the net. Poor Sweety. I guess I am used to swinging a bat not a racket. I will not give up though. I have to try again. I have to say I am very sore from the experience which is good. I used some muscles I usually don't use. Yesterday was an all around good day. Had a great church service, celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary, and watched 2 playoff games. I can't believe I have been married 18 years! Where does the time go? The Lord has truly blessed me with the most wonderful husband.

Now onto football. What a great day. I am a huge NY Giants fan. I used to live 10 minutes from Giants Stadium. So when the Giants ran all over Atlanta yesterday it was great. Sweety is a Steelers fan and although I wanted to support him (especially on our anniversary) I just wanted to see Tim Tebow win that game. Besides....the Steelers were just in the Superbowl. I know I am a bad wife. Well in the end Tebow pulled it off in overtime and won the game. So that was my weekend. Oh I forgot to mention I ate way too much but did buy a new Leslie Sansone walking DVD which I did all 5 miles on Saturday. So that was good. All in all a great weekend. Today's tip: Try something you haven't done before. It may be tennis like me or walking a mile or a Pilates class etc....You may not be great at it, but it it great exercise and you may find out you like it. Well it is 2012. A new year with new ideas, tips and hopefully some new motivation. I hope to not only try to up my game health wise, but also in other aspects of my life, including relationships with people and food, and my spiritual life.

I don't make resolutions but I do aspire to do more... to be more. I want to be a better wife and mother, a better friend, daughter, worker.

So today we took down our decorations and started fresh.

I actually slept in....till 9:30. I haven't done that in ages. I had some fruit for breakfast, should have had more but the waking up late messed me up. I made a quick soba noodle soup for lunch with a yogurt, and a salad with grilled chicken for dinner. It felt really good to eat light.

-The salad was really good, but I do admit to still being a bit hungry still. I had a half of a yogurt for dessert and that is it. I have to stop the evening snacking. That is where I struggle the most.

I got a 30 minute workout in as well. It felt great.

Happy New Year to you all.

Today's tip: Sit down and plan out some personal goals for this year. Write it down. Make it simple. Stick with it.

Blessings,

Trish
